Digital Foundry Impressed By Halo: Campaign Evolved, But Worried About Unreal Engine 5

“Some unfortunate Unreal Engine 5 complications…”

In its most recent weekly podcast episode, the team at Digital Foundry has examined last week’s Halo: Campaign Evolved reveal – and their opinions are varied on the title, despite being captivated by Halo Studios’ vision thus far.

The essence of DF’s discussion centers on two principal aspects: Halo Studios’ artistic approach for the remake, and its Unreal Engine 5 framework. The team appears to be quite impressed with the overall aesthetic of the game and how the developer is reinterpreting a classic, but the visible UE5 complications currently displayed are raising concerns.

Here’s a portion of what host John Linneman shared regarding the matter:

“When I observe this, I see numerous remarkable elements, but I also identify several aspects to critique; however, I believe the task that they [Halo Studios] faced — remaking something like this — is quite substantial because it’s so embedded in people’s memories. The first observation I’ll make is that this represents a substantial advance visually and stylistically over the original remaster [from 2011]. This aligns much more closely with the appearance and ambiance of the original Halo while utilizing modern technology. I’m appreciating what they’re accomplishing here.

Sadly, we have arrived at a stage where there’s complete global prevalence of Unreal Engine 5. And one instantly notices all the UE5 details standing out […] You notice all the noise, the fizz, the micro-traversal stutters, the Lumen problems, plus the low resolution – those limitations are rather apparent, if you will.”

Linneman emphasizes that this is all preliminary footage, of course, and that Halo Studios will probably be refining this for the majority of another year before the remake actually releases to the public. There is worry concerning the Halo: Campaign Evolved engine, however, and whether the development team can resolve issues that appear inherent to Epic Games’ technology itself.

The conversation progresses with fellow host Alex Battaglia also voicing their concerns regarding Unreal Engine 5, in a bit more detail, before Richard Leadbetter contributes some of their own insights. If you wish to watch the complete discussion, we suggest tuning into the video above; the Halo: Campaign Evolved discussion occurs within the first 20-minutes or so of the podcast!
