Control’s New 120FPS Mode Tested In Latest Digital Foundry Analysis

“The benefits are evident”

Earlier this month, Remedy revealed its latest update for Control Ultimate Editionintroducing a host of current-generation features that had been available in the PC version for several months prior. Since then, Digital Foundry has been evaluating these features across all platforms including Xbox Series X|S; the outcomes of which are presented in the video above.

To provide some context, this patch featured unlocked 120FPS support on current-gen consoles (excluding Xbox Series S), enhanced anti-aliasing, HDR functionality, and more – all of which have been examined by the DF team.

And, the findings are indeed quite intriguing. In their assessment of the 120Hz mode, Xbox Series X performance is closer to PS5 Pro than the regular PS5 – average frame rates during the game’s opening sequence are as follows: PS570.7FPS, PS5 Pro86.3FPS, Xbox Series X82.3FPS. As previously stated, Series S still caps at a maximum of 60FPS.

There is also a 40FPS mode available for 120Hz users on Series X if you prefer visuals over raw performance, and the new anti-aliasing methods have also been scrutinized in the analysis. The specifics of these evaluations are outlined in the video above, and we’ll summarize the team’s verdict on this new Control patch below:

“Control’s latest October update for console truly maximizes the available hardware. The 120Hz output, unlocked frame rate mode, and VRR support all have distinct applications here. Similarly, the graphics mode’s new 40FPS is a fantastic addition that achieves a pleasing balance between performance and visual quality.”

Anyway, if you believe that all this creates the ideal moment to dive into Remedy’s mind-bending action title on Xbox, then we’ve got great news for you! Control Ultimate Edition is part of all tiers of Xbox Game Pass, and it’s currently on promotion at 90% off right now digitally as well – priced at just $3.99 / £3.49 on the Xbox Store!
