The launch appears to be a considerable distance away, however
The forthcoming installment in the Mass Effect franchise was revealed back in 2020, yet we have hardly received any updates regarding it over the last five years. Theories have circulated that it might have been terminated, but that is untrue.
In a blog post to commemorate N7 Day today, executive producer Mike Gamble indicated that after an “incredibly hectic” few years at BioWare, the team is now solely concentrating on Mass Effect 5 (or whatever the finalized title will be). Nevertheless, it still sounds like a launch is quite a long way off:
“Like you, we’ve seen the speculation recently. You’ve expressed clearly that you care significantly about what’s ahead. So let’s begin by clarifying: the next Mass Effect installment is under development, and EA and BioWare are dedicated to delivering more narratives in this universe.”
“The reality is, the previous few years have been an exceedingly busy period at BioWare. But at the moment, the team is fully committed and focused exclusively on Mass Effect. We have a vast universe to explore, numerous features to create, and many romances to navigate. We’re thrilled about what we’re crafting, and we assure you: when we’re prepared, showcasing it will be a great deal of fun.”
That’s… essentially all there is for the moment. All we’ve encountered in recent years are a teaser trailer and a few pieces of art, so we’re presuming BioWare isn’t ready to provide us with a complete look at how the next Mass Effect is progressing.
It seems quite reasonable to predict it will be launched on the next Xbox console rather than the Series X and S as a consequence (unless it receives a last-gen edition), so perhaps that will influence how the game is being created as well.
In related Mass Effect updates, Gamble also mentioned the impending Amazon TV series that will “explore a brand-new storyline within the universe’s timeline, and will be set post the original trilogy”. It’s reportedly going very well in the writer’s room at this moment, and everyone is quite enthusiastic about its progress.
As for Mass Effect 5, however, it may be some time until we receive any genuinely concrete information about it…
