Battlefield 6 Keeps Xbox & PlayStation Players Together Even With Crossplay Switched Off

PC players separated

Cross-play has become a more controversial topic in recent years, with plenty of console players often left frustrated by being matched up in unfair scenarios with PC players. One way to combat that is to switch cross-play off of course, but Battlefield 6 is doing things a little differently – and it may help the player base in the long run.

First off, BF6 has an in-game cross-play toggle, which makes accessing the setting easy enough. Then, Battlefield Studios has spoken to IGN about how each setting works, including the fact that cross-play being off still brings Xbox & PS5 players together. We’ll chuck some quotes down below explaining each setting:

  • Cross-play on: “If you’re a console player, we are looking for other console players in a set time frame, and then if we need to fill up the lobby more, we will look towards PC players.
  • Cross-play off: “Console-only crossplay happens if you turn it off. When you flip that switch, then you get, basically, console-only crossplay, and that is, we don’t fill with PC players.

This is particularly good news because, well, the main reason folks often want cross-play turned off is to get away from PC players – either because of mouse & keyboard controls or because of cheating. The way Battlefield 6 is doing things means that the increased player pool of Xbox + PS5 will always be present, even when players go ahead and switch cross-play off.

If this sort of thing sounds familiar, it’s because other games have looked at this as an option as well. Earlier in the year, Call of Duty introduced console-only cross-play for certain modes, which BF6 is now expanding on here throughout the whole multiplayer experience. And to be honest, this is music to our ears!

What do you make of these BF6 cross-play settings? Talk to us about it down below.
