Xbox Cloud Gaming Launches on LG Smart TVs with Built-in App Integration

Later this year, LG’s inaugural collection of Smart TVs will be upgraded to come with an Xbox application, enabling Game Pass Ultimate subscribers to access Xbox’s Cloud Gaming service directly through the television.

Ultimate members will likely be able to commence playing their titles on Smart TVs via cloud support in 2022. Initially, this was restricted to Samsung TVs, marking a significant expansion since the feature was introduced.

In November, Xbox revealed a new feature for Ultimate members to cloud stream non-Game Pass titles they own. This may also be part of Xbox’s collaboration with LG, allowing gamers to stream “over 50 games.” The company intends to share more detailed features in the upcoming months.

Before partnering with LG, Xbox focused on broadening its Cloud Gaming service to additional gaming platforms and hardware, including iOS, Meta Quest, and Google Chromebooks. It has also integrated its own internal products, such as Microsoft Edge and Bing, into the Cloud Gaming ecosystem.

Despite the advancements, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty previously dismissed the cloud gaming market as “very, very small” during the company’s efforts to acquire Activision Blizzard in 2023.

Regardless of Booty’s comments, leaked documents from the trial against the FTC prior to that acquisition indicated that Xbox genuinely sees potential in cloud streaming games. At that time, one of the long-term strategies mentioned was a hybrid gaming platform that could “leverage the combined power of the client and cloud to deliver greater immersion and entirely new categories of gaming experiences.”

This next-generation device was considered a “new innovation” for the Xbox hardware lineup, and according to these documents, is anticipated to launch in 2028.
