Will Wright, the visionary behind The Sims and co-founder of its creator Maxis, has unveiled fresh details about his upcoming AI life simulation game, Proxi.

The game was initially revealed in 2018, and a gameplay trailer was released just a month ago by its developer Gallium Studio to highlight its development progress. Just the day before recently, Wright appeared on Twitch to discuss the game’s creation (as noted by PC Gamer).

Proxi is an imaginative life simulation where players can communicate with an AI to create environments drawn from their memories. Players input a memory in the form of descriptive text, referred to as a “mem,” which the game interprets and transforms into a dynamic scene utilizing assets crafted by the developers (and ultimately, players as well).

Players can then adjust these scenes to refine the details. They also “train your Proxi’s mind with each new memory” by arranging them on a memory timeline and mind map to maintain relationships.

Furthermore, players can integrate these memories into a personalized thought-world constructed from editable hexagonal tiles, while emotional analysis will influence the environment according to the sentiments of the memories placed within. Collaborative worlds can be created together with others.

The trailer reveals that players can introduce Proxies of friends and family into their world, engage in gaming together, and transfer them to other realms – Minecraft and Roblox are highlighted as examples.

During the BreakthroughT1D Twitch stream, Wright explained why he aims to use genuine memories of players to create a personalized experience.

“I found myself getting increasingly closer to the player,” he mentioned. “A mantra I’ve held onto is that no game designer has ever gone astray by overestimating the vanity of their players.”

He chuckled: “It stands to reason that the more I can craft a game around you, the more you’ll enjoy it.”

BreakthroughT1D is a global organization funding research into type 1 diabetes, featuring a Twitch channel with discussions and podcasts. The stream was hosted by Simmers Arielehm and Emily Morganti.

The studio’s official website indicates that Proxi is nearing its release and does not specify platforms.

Wright appears eager for Proxi to delve into the various interpretations and philosophies surrounding memory. It certainly looks to be a powerful tool and an intriguing concept, although it has been six years since its initial announcement and the notion of AI has significantly evolved.
