Whispers Emerge: Will the Oblivion Remake Finally Arrive This June?
A fresh piece of information regarding Bethesda’s long-rumored – yet still unannounced – remake of Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion has emerged through a recent leak, hinting that it might be released this June.
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion remake – reportedly in development using Unreal Engine 5 – was initially speculated in July 2023, when a former employee of Virtuos mentioned on Reddit that it was in progress at the Chinese studio. Interestingly, mentions of an Oblivion remaster surfaced later that same year, identified in a confidential Microsoft document from 2020 that was leaked during the company’s legal battle with the FTC, providing at least some validation to the initial claim.
However, that was not the end of it. Earlier this month, a technical art director from Virtuos updated their LinkedIn profile to showcase their involvement in a mysterious “unannounced Unreal Engine 5 remake,” and now another ex-employee has seemingly unwittingly shared additional details about a Virtuos-developed Oblivion remake on their own website.
As noted by MP1st, the unnamed former employee – who reportedly worked on the project between 2023 and 2024 – characterized the game as a “completely remade” version of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, developed (as previously suggested) in Unreal 5. This ex-employee is also believed to have mentioned six gameplay mechanics that were revamped for the remake: stamina, stealth, blocking, archery, hit reaction, and HUD.
The new blocking system, as summarized by MP1st, is said to draw inspiration from titles such as Souls-likes, aiming to replace an older system that was perceived as too “slow” and “frustrating.” Meanwhile, the archery mechanics have been enhanced to make it “more playable and modern” from both first- and third-person perspectives. The new stamina system is described as being “less frustrating,” with the penalty for depletion now significantly mitigated.
