Fortnite is currently offline, but thankfully this is not due to any issues. Quite the opposite, in fact–Fortnite is down for its regularly scheduled maintenance that Epic performs with each update. In this instance, the update is significant: the launch of Fortnite Battle Royale Chapter 6 Season 2, which includes major changes to the island, a plethora of new weapons and items, and the introduction of Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat.[[Update: Servers are back online, and the new season has commenced. You can view everything new in Fortnite Season 2 in our summary, along with all the new weapons, map alterations, and what’s included in the battle pass.]
Chapter 6 kicked off with quite a flourish during Season 1, as Fortnite unveiled the permanent OG mode with its own separate battle pass, in addition to the Counter-Strike-inspired Ballistic mode. In January, the season intensified once again with the introduction of the player-controlled Godzilla boss and Hatsune Miku’s appearance during the Event. But all good things must come to an end–we had our fun with the outrageous Typhoon Blade, but now it’s time to transition to more primitive weapons, like the enormous drill weapon we spotted in the trailer.
Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 2 release time
Once the servers are back up, it will be Lawless season, which is centered on engaging in armed heists. That’s right, it marks Fortnite’s fourth heist-themed season. However, unlike previous seasons which had a more subtle approach, Lawless season will channel a vibe more akin to Grand Theft Auto–chaos is the name of the game here.
Since we are already experiencing downtime, the wait isn’t too lengthy. Fortnite went offline at 2 AM ET/11 PM PT, and season updates typically take around 4-7 hours. If everything goes smoothly, you could potentially be battling in Crime City by 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET. However, don’t take that for granted–when Chapter 5 Season 2 launched last year, things went awry, and Fortnite remained offline until the evening. But that was a truly uncommon circumstance. Most seasons launch between 4 AM – 7 AM PT / 7 AM – 10 AM ET.
