Romancing SaGa 2 is a complete remake of the 1993 Super Famicom classic. An HD version of the original was also released in 2017, but this new remake enhances the experience with full 3D visuals and revamps the turn-based combat system to align with the “timeline” system seen in recent titles like SaGa Emerald Beyond. Additionally, there are several quality of life improvements to make the game more accessible for new players, including various difficulty options.

Romancing SaGa 2 for Nintendo Switch may not look as impressive as the PS5 version, but it offers the added advantage of portability. However, it’s not the only way to enjoy the game on a handheld device.

Initially, the series began as a spin-off titled Final Legend Story, but it swiftly developed into its own unique franchise. Unlike many other JRPGs from the 90s, SaGa games are notable for their non-linear narratives and complex character development systems that resemble 90s computer RPGs more closely.
In Romancing SaGa 2, players take on the roles of multiple members of a royal lineage who strive to protect their realm against existential threats. There are also comprehensive castle-building mechanics that allow you to construct and fortify fortresses throughout your domain. As with other titles in the series, your choices about where to travel, whom to interact with, and which side quests to complete can significantly impact the storyline’s progression. It provides a surprisingly open-ended experience, even by contemporary standards, and this new remake presents an excellent opportunity to either try it out for the first time or revisit it and explore an entirely different narrative path.
