We’re back with the February edition of the Nintendo Life Mailbox. Time is crawling for those of us eager for the Switch 2 Announcement, but we’ve had titles like Civ 7, Laika, and Citizen Sleeper 2 to keep us occupied, and we’re all looking forward to Xenoblade Chronicles X – it would indeed be fantastic if it launched on February 20 instead of March 20.

Anyway, it’s time for our monthly letter page feature. Do you have something you want to express? We’re excited and ready to hear about your gaming thoughts.

Each month we’ll showcase a Featured Letter, and the author will receive a month’s subscription to our ad-free Supporter program. Be sure to check the submission guidelines at the bottom of this page.

This month, letters have been rather sparse (or utterly irrelevant), so be sure to send your gaming-related messages and doodles our way for next time!

Alright, let’s dive in.

“a bad thing” (***STAR LETTER***)

First off, my favorite game of all time is Earthbound, and if you disagree, well, let’s just say…that’s totally understandable, and I value your opinion. I often tell people my second favorite game, though, is “Mega Man”. Which one? It’s probably either Mega Man 2, 3, X, or X2. But there’s nothing wrong with 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, X3, and X4. Heck, even 1 and 8 are pretty good. Did I mention the Game Boy titles? It’s always challenging to sift through them, because if you think about it, all the games are so closely related, yet all are quite excellent.

When did that become a bad thing?

When did it become a complete offense to create an iterative sequel? You know that if Mario Kart 9 doesn’t reinvigorate the formula (possibly literally) that some of us will be up in arms. “How DARE the new Assassin’s Creed be just like the last one!?” “Tears of the Kingdom should’ve been DLC for Breath of the Wild!” I’m all for taking risks and developing something fresh. Pokemon definitely became/ is in dire need of a status quo shake-up, and if something didn’t succeed the first time, why would you revert to the same formula? Yet sometimes, with certain franchises, staying within the lines is more than acceptable, and considering thinking outside the box could lead to producing a Mega Man X7. Maybe there’s a reason restaurants keep offering the same menu, and it’s absolutely fine for games to give us more of the same.

The vast number of games available right now — incredible ones! — makes it harder to discuss sequels that often mix things up, I would say. With all the bright genre tributes we have, a new Mega Man should aim higher than just being another ‘of its kind’, right? If a series completely strays from its roots, a solid, back-to-basics entry can realign things rather than veer completely off course, but minor adjustments to the same system can always work. It’s not a crime; it’s just sensible.

Iteration is essential, but so is innovation and striving for something novel. We’re not going to run short on quality Metroidvanias, so a genuine Metroid or Castlevania needs to be something quite exceptional. Otherwise, what’s the point?– Ed.

“wise to arrive”

So, I’ve never owned a launch console before. In fact, I’ve only had my PS5 for a year. However, I’m now in a position to afford the Switch 2 when it releases. I’d love to lay my hands on a launch Switch 2 (even though my local GameStop guy hinted at a Pokemon Version that I assume might not come out simultaneously). My question is: How early do you think it would be wise to show up at any retailer offering preorders when they start taking them? Thanks!
Ethan

Hmm, not to cast doubts on the knowledge of the GameStop guy, but I wouldn’t expect any themed SKUs in the launch year.

In terms of pre-orders, get there as early as is reasonable, but also keep in mind that one of Nintendo’s main objectives with the launch is to meet demand. So unless they totally fail in that area, you should still be able to snag one if you’re keeping an eye on things. You shouldn’t have to camp outside the store to secure your pre-order at least.

But hey, I’m a guy who improbably purchased the last Wii from Woolworths in December 2006, and randomly wandered into a department store to pick up a Switch off the shelf on launch day in 2017. Perhaps I’ve just been fortunate. Some people enjoy setting up camp on the sidewalk for a variety of these items. If that’s you, go for it! – Ed.

And now onto the Bonus section! See, I told you it was a light month.

Bonus Letters

I was curious if you’d consider no longer linking to X anymore? For instance, if a story originates from a tweet, you could repost the content or use a cropped screenshot without including a link.” – Twilite9

This arrived too late to make the final Mailbox, but it certainly deserves mentioning my reply to a comment back at the end of January – check that out for more depth.

TL;DR: We’re disappointed with how things have transpired and we’ve made various adjustments in our approach to that platform. Right now, it remains a general application for announcements and discussions from industry players, so you will still see it sourced appropriately when no other sources are available. For any inquiries, our contact form is the best place for them. – Ed.
