Unleashing the Potential: What Arcane Achieves That The Witcher and The Last of Us Couldn’t
More online gaming narratives are being adapted for film and television than ever before, and Arcane writer Amanda Overton believes it will accomplish what The Last of Us and The Witcher simply cannot.
When a series is based on a single-player game, there is often limited flexibility available. The characters possess their own narrative arcs, and there typically isn’t much to expand upon until a sequel is released. However, Arcane is inspired by League of Legends, a constantly evolving live-service game.
“It’s quite uncommon – not many games are as dynamic, fluid, and adaptable, as League of Legends,” Overton shares with us. “It updates regularly, it transforms, it’s a very agile and shifting game. Thus, there’s not much room for a game adaptation to also modify the game or adjust it. The Last of Us cannot do that, The Witcher cannot do that. Any game adaptation we have seen recently does not share the same connection with League that Arcane has.”
A significant advantage is that Arcane can navigate through the lore of League of Legends, selecting and choosing what it wants to incorporate. There are definitely some discrepancies for League enthusiasts, but the overall alterations benefit the series effectively.
Riot also permitted Arcane to eliminate any characters they wished, which allows viewers to genuinely feel the tension and emotions conveyed when a character was in jeopardy or perished during the series.
