The foundation day of Emergence Gears of War: E-Day will be collaboratively developed by the acclaimed shooter studio Of us Can Fly, known for its strong roots in the classic 2004 FPS Painkiller and most recently recognized for the looter shooter Outriders.

The official Gears of War social media accounts have been quiet since a few brief announcements and speculations last year; Of us Can Fly disclosed today’s news in a blog announcement of their own. “We are thrilled to return to the universe of Gears of War, a franchise profoundly ingrained in our studio’s past,” the studio states. “As the primary developer of the renowned Gears of War: Judgment and as a co-development partner on Gears of War 1-3, we have always held a deep passion for the series and its heritage.”

Mike Crump, the studio chief at Gears developer The Coalition, expresses that the team is “excited to be working alongside the talented individuals at Of us Can Fly who have been integral to our franchise’s journey for so many years.”

“Our team at Of us Can Fly, composed of devoted Gears of War enthusiasts, is dedicating all our efforts to crafting an experience that will surpass expectations,” mentions Of us Can Fly director Guillaume Barry. “While we can’t reveal much at this moment, we eagerly anticipate the day we can showcase all the thrilling developments we have been working on.”

Of us Can Fly’s background is a vibrant blend of impressive titles and easily overlooked roles. Gears is undeniably part of their essence, but did you realize that the studio also contributed to Fortnite: Save the World when it was still under Epic Games Poland before it reverted back to its original name and identity? And let’s not forget the various iterations of Bulletstorm, arguably the studio’s most recognizable title, at least for those who tragically haven’t experienced Painkiller. Outriders, on the other hand, enjoyed positive reviews and actually “surprised” its publisher Square Enix, though it seems to have been overshadowed by a wave of similarly styled looter shooters.

All of this serves to illustrate that Of us Can Fly has been in the industry for more than two decades, and the studio is already well-versed in Gears of War, so their involvement in E-Day is both thrilling and expected, much like a relative you haven’t seen in ten years showing up at your holiday gathering.

Fully committed to maintaining the authenticity of the prequel, The Coalition confirmed last year that the original actors for Marcus and Dom are “so back” for the prequel Gears of War: E-Day.
