Unity Restructures Workforce and Shutters 23 Offices in 2024
Unity has verified that it severed employment with over 1,700 employees during the previous fiscal year.
This decision underscores the extent of disruption at the game engine developer after it declared a comprehensive restructuring plan at the start of 2024.
According to Unity’s latest 10-K filing, the firm employed a total of 4,987 full-time staff across 34 locations in 17 nations as of December 31, 2024.
In comparison, the company previously had 6,748 full-time employees across 57 sites in 19 countries as of December 31, 2023.
This indicates that Unity has terminated its relationship with precisely 1,761 full-time workers during the past year and shut down 23 offices in the process.
While the exact number of these separations attributed to layoffs remains unknown, Unity had previously stated its intention to eliminate significant redundancies last year as part of a strategy to implement a “customer-first” business model.
The company had anticipated that these reductions would impact around 25 percent of its workforce—equivalent to about 1,800 employees.
Unity faced approximately $214 million in employee separation costs as a result of this downsizing. Additionally, the company incurred another $53 million in “non-employee expenses related to this restructuring in 2024,” mainly within research and development.
Recent reports indicate that the company has continued to implement layoffs throughout the current fiscal year.
Evaluating its financial performance during 2024, Unity stated that its fourth-quarter results “significantly surpassed” expectations despite a reported 25 percent drop in revenue.
Full-year revenue also fell by 17 percent to $1.81 billion. Unity explained that this decline was driven by a broader “portfolio reset.”
