Unity promises to deliver ‘battle-tested’ Switch 2 support

The Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to arrive on store shelves on June 5, and game developer Unity has outlined how this could greatly benefit developers focusing on the next-gen platform.

The company indicated that support for Switch 2 will become available “soon” in Unity 6, enabling developers to effortlessly create, port, optimize, and launch their projects on the console.

It stated that developers will be able to take advantage of performance optimization tools such as the Universal Render Pipeline (URP), Spatial-Temporal Post-Processing (STP), and GPU Resident Drawer to “maximize the capability” of the Nintendo Switch 2 without sacrificing performance.

The firm has also promised enhanced multiplayer features that expand on its existing Nintendo Switch support, which is particularly important given that Nintendo emphasized multiplayer and social aspects during its Switch 2 reveal.

Comprehensive developer documentation for Nintendo Switch 2 will be introduced to facilitate a smoother learning curve for developers adapting to the platform.

Unity is also planning to make it easier for developers to transfer titles from the Nintendo Switch to Switch 2 by ensuring full compatibility with key features in Unity 6, including the new input system, Input Profiles, and Incremental Input Pipeline.

According to Unity CEO Matthew Bromberg, the company has already “battle-tested” its production capabilities through hands-on development of an unnamed Switch 2 launch title.

“The significant feedback received during the development phase provided insights that will drive further improvements to the Unity engine for developers creating new games for this platform,” he added.

Unity noted that any parties looking to develop on the platform must be an officially recognized Nintendo Switch 2 developer.
