“Unexpected Revelations: The Minecraft Creator Hints at a Sequel”
Minecraft‘s original creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson has seemingly revealed his aspiration to craft a spiritual successor to the best-selling video game of all time in the most peculiar way imaginable.
A few days ago on social media, Notch inquired of his followers whether he should continue developing the “classic roguelike” featuring “tile-based first-person” dungeon exploration that is presently in progress, or if he should abandon that idea in favor of a “spiritual successor concept to Minecraft” via a poll. Notably, that poll overwhelmingly leans towards the Minecraft 2 option, with 77% of participants favoring it.
In a follow-up tweet that has since been erased but was shared in various places online, Notch reaffirmed his stance. “I’ve essentially announced Minecraft 2,” he stated. “I reasoned that perhaps people genuinely do want me to create another game that closely resembles the first one, and I’m thrilled to be working on games again.” He further noted that many spiritual successors “tend to be kind of… you know… lackluster. Sad. The very things I’m worried my next game could turn into, and I am striving to avoid that.”
Certainly, he cannot officially call it Minecraft 2 since he sold the game’s rights and Mojang Studios to Microsoft for $2.5 billion a decade ago, effectively making Notch a billionaire. “I also plan to approach this in a manner that absolutely doesn’t [attempt] to sneakily infringe upon the phenomenal work the Mojang team is accomplishing and that Microsoft is successfully undertaking.”
It remains significant that Notch hasn’t released an actual game since his exit from the franchise 10 years ago, despite launching another studio to do so, which suggests a considerable chance that this “Minecraft 2” may never materialize. It is also worth noting that Notch’s name became associated with Minecraft for controversial political statements.
