Unexpected HDMI Bandwidth Test: How the PS5 Fell Behind the Xbox Series X

By on January 21, 2025 0 4 Views

“The Xbox Series X can achieve 4K120 at full RGB/444”

Does the Xbox Series X possess superior HDMI 2.1 bandwidth compared to the PS5? You might be aware of this, as it was examined a couple of years ago by a YouTuber named Vincent Teoh, who has recently returned to evaluate the PS5 Pro as well.

It appears that the PS5 Pro has the same specification as the PS5 in this regard, specifically featuring 32Gbps of HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, while the Xbox Series X comes in higher at 40Gbps. Here’s a brief overview of Vincent’s latest assessment:

We’re not technology experts here at Pure Xbox, so even we were a little puzzled about what this actually means – but generally, it seems that for games that can achieve 4K, 120FPS on the PS5 Pro, the image quality is somewhat reduced in order to accommodate the lower bandwidth, whereas on the Xbox Series X, this is not necessary. This assumes you are using a display that supports the optimal visual settings on Series X through HDMI 2.1 as well.

It should be noted that for the majority of users, the difference between the two may be minimal, and the PS5 Pro remains a very capable console even without the 40Gbps of HDMI 2.1 bandwidth. That being said, considering it is an expensive “Pro” console aimed at technology enthusiasts, it is surprising to see that it hasn’t kept pace with the Series X in this domain.
