The Marvel Rivals Vanguard roster is somewhat limited at the start, featuring only a few heroes to choose from. Vanguards return as tanks, equipped with substantial health pools and abilities focused on either protecting teammates or disrupting opposing players. The best tanks excel at both roles and offer a wide array of skills to create chaos. Similar to the Strategists, there aren’t many Vanguard heroes in Marvel Rivals currently, but more are planned for future updates. In Marvel Rivals’ latest meta, none of the Vanguard characters feel too obsolete to be effective, but some clearly outperform the others. Here are the top tanks in Marvel Rivals.
8. Magneto
Magneto holds the lowest rank here, primarily because many heroes can achieve what he does, but more effectively. His focus lies mainly on defense, utilizing a shield to protect against incoming projectiles and attacks. The shield can absorb a significant amount of damage, though not as much as other tanks. He can grant shields to both himself and allies, which briefly block incoming damage, thereby charging Magneto’s projectile attack. When charged, the projectile can push back enemies, but it remains a basic attack.
Magneto does inflict considerable damage, and his ultimate is a robust AoE attack that delivers substantial damage if successfully executed, so it’s not all downsides for him. However, he is not as strong a choice in comparison to many other tanks.
7. Hulk (Bruce Banner)
Hulk is somewhat of an unconventional tank, as he is entirely focused on diving into the enemy team, but he has lower sustainability than some of the other dive tanks. He possesses a shield, and his ultimate transforms him into Monster Hulk, replenishing his health and increasing damage output. However, if the enemy team concentrates on him or he fails to receive adequate healing, Hulk can quickly revert to Bruce Banner—notably similar to D.Va in Overwatch.
That being said, Hulk boasts high damage output and can eliminate opponents much more easily than many other tanks. In skilled hands and proper positioning, Hulk is quite formidable. If you can dive in and out effortlessly while targeting the right enemies, Hulk is usually a solid pick, but it demands a lot of factors to align in your favor.
6. Captain America
Captain America is undoubtedly one of the more intricate tanks to master and can often feel challenging to play if you do not have a strong grasp of his abilities. His attack combo changes as a shield throw becomes available when you successfully connect the second punch of the combo. This means you must truly commit to both throwing and landing punches to inflict significant damage. He also has a dodge ability that can be utilized to execute a diving strike effectively. Moreover, Cap’s shield throw can ricochet, and he can maintain his shield up to reflect incoming projectiles, making his shield more dynamic than Magneto’s.
There’s a lot to keep track of, and Captain America excels during battles, so it’s essential to monitor all of these cooldowns under pressure. Many of these abilities can feel like they don’t carry much impact, even if they inflict a noticeable amount of damage, so it takes time to develop a genuine feel for them. His ultimate lacks the flair of others in the game, as it propels him around, providing speed and health bonuses while allowing you to land punches, which again, may not feel particularly impactful, although it’s effective.
5. Thor
Thor serves as a high-damage tank that excels while diving into the enemy team, albeit with some need for mindful meter management. He possesses three hammer charges, which regenerate over time or can be replenished by striking enemies with the Lightning Realm attack. Thor generally needs to be up close to be effective, as his primary attack is melee, except when you activate Awakening Rune, which grants lightning projectiles.
Thor has a nice ability to position yourself in the action and can also throw his hammer from a distance. However, the main drawback for Thor is the hammer charge ability, which grants bonus health upon use. While there are ways to recharge them, such as through the Lightning Realm, its limited range makes missing a bit problematic, leading to a cooldown of five seconds per charge, which feels a touch lengthy in practical terms. Nevertheless, he does have a powerful AoE ultimate that can easily take out multiple targets, which is a valuable asset.
4. Venom
Venom is currently the top dive tank in Marvel Rivals, so if that’s your preferred style, don’t let his place on this ranking discourage you from playing him. Venom has the capability to web swing and dive on enemies, inflicting damage and lifting them. The web swing is a crucial part of his kit, allowing him to easily maneuver in and out of combat, which is essential for a diving playstyle. His Symbiotic Resistance grants him 100 bonus health and converts 100% of missing health into bonus health, effectively giving him a second health bar when used properly, enabling you to retreat from combat and seek some healing.
Moreover, Venom can also inflict critical damage with his primary attack, making him quite dangerous if you have a solid strategy. His ultimate deals damage based on how much health the enemies possess, offering even more bonus health, allowing Venom some remarkable sustainability in battles, making him an excellent choice for anyone who enjoys being actively engaged in the action.
3. Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange is an effective defender in Marvel Rivals who can also inflict substantial damage.
