Ubisoft is reportedly developing a game inspired by Animal Crossing named Alterra. Within this game, players will construct their residence on an island populated by NPCs known as “Matterlings.” Players can leave their home to discover new biomes, Matterlings, and resources found in the surrounding area.

Insider Gaming was the first to report on the development of Alterra. According to the report, the game will use voxels to create its environment. For context, voxel graphics represent cubes arranged in a grid, similar to Minecraft. Alterra will also include building and crafting mechanics, allowing players to create items and areas using materials they gather in the game world. The report states that Alterra originated from a canceled project that also employed voxel graphics.

Insider Gaming claims they have seen images of Alterra’s NPCs. The Matterlings are said to resemble Funko Pops, meaning quirky collectible figures with large heads, albeit in a voxel style. Some Matterlings look like mythical creatures such as dragons, while others resemble real-world animals like birds and polar bears.

The report asserts that Alterra is currently in development at Ubisoft Montreal. Patrick Redding (formerly the lead on Gotham Knights) serves as the project’s creative director. Fabien Lhéraud, who has spent over twenty years working as a marketing, branding, and media manager at Ubisoft, is the lead producer for Alterra. The report suggests that the game has been in development for 18 months and could still be several years from release.
