Ubisoft spins off novel subsidiary for 3 of its greatest franchises in partnership with Tencent

Ubisoft has recently unveiled its latest “transformation” by establishing a brand new subsidiary dedicated to some of its most significant and well-tested franchises. The rumors that surfaced earlier this month have been confirmed, revealing that the new company (yet to be named) is backed by a remarkable investment of €1.16 billion (approximately $1.25 billion USD) from Chinese conglomerate Tencent, which will hold a minority share.

In an announcement, Ubisoft highlighted that the new subsidiary will concentrate on “creating game ecosystems designed to remain genuinely evergreen and cross-platform.” It anticipates that the influx of capital will enhance its creative and business prospects, boosting “the quality of narrative-driven single-player experiences, expanding multiplayer offerings with more frequent content releases, introducing free-to-play access points, and integrating additional social features.”

Ubisoft will reportedly continue developing games from other Tom Clancy franchises, such as The Division and Ghost Recon, both notably mentioned in the statement. No further franchises were elaborated on.

Ubisoft’s march toward “agility and ambition”

“Today Ubisoft is initiating a new chapter in its history,” cofounder and CEO Yves Guillemot expressed in a press release. “As we accelerate the company’s transformation, this constitutes a fundamental step in reshaping Ubisoft’s operational framework that will allow us to be both agile and ambitious. Our focus is on building robust game ecosystems aimed at becoming evergreen, fostering high-performing brands, and developing new IPs driven by cutting-edge and emerging technologies.”

“With the formation of a dedicated subsidiary that can lead development for three of our major franchises and the inclusion of Tencent as a minority investor, we are crystallizing the value of our assets, bolstering our balance sheet, and establishing optimal conditions for long-term growth and success of these franchises. With its dedicated and self-sustaining leadership team, it will focus on transforming these three brands into unique ecosystems,” he continued.

Towards the end of the reveal, several key elements surfaced regarding the new teams working on the three franchises in question. The new subsidiary will include the teams currently working on Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six, Assassin’s Creed, and Ghost Recon franchises located in Montréal, Quebec, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, Barcelona, and Sofia, and will encompass both back catalog and new games for those properties moving forward.

Like many prominent publishers, Ubisoft has faced a tumultuous journey over the past few years. Earlier in 2025, it underwent a series of studio closures and widespread layoffs by parting ways with its staff in Leamington. Last year, the publisher cut jobs at its Cary and San Francisco offices as well as in its global publishing team.
