Ubisoft has revealed a significant transformation within its organization as it ventures into the future, having established a new “dedicated subsidiary” aimed at three key franchises: Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six. Tencent is investing €1.16 billion ($1.25 billion USD) to acquire a minority share (approximately 25%) in this new subsidiary.
Ubisoft mentioned that the aspects of its business not included in this new entity, such as The Division and Ghost Recon, as well as the development of certain new IP, will continue to operate concurrently. However, it remains uncertain how these modifications might impact possible layoffs or studio closures.
“This newly formed subsidiary will prioritize creating game ecosystems meant to be truly evergreen and multi-platform. With enhanced investment and amplified creative capabilities, it will facilitate further improvements in the quality of narrative-driven solo experiences, broaden multiplayer offerings with a higher frequency of content releases, introduce free-to-play elements, and incorporate more social functionalities,” Ubisoft stated.
Tencent emerged victorious after a “competitive process” in which Ubisoft considered various “strategic options.” It had been previously reported that Microsoft and EA were being assessed in some capacity.
In conjunction with the announcement of this new business entity, Ubisoft indicated it will “focus on nurturing” its other franchises, including Ghost Recon and The Division, while also continuing to develop new IP and enhancing its game engine technologies and online services. Ubisoft stated it will share further information “at a later date.”
Ubisoft co-founder and CEO Yves Guillemot described this moment as a “new chapter” in the company’s history, branding it a “foundational step in transforming Ubisoft’s operational model.”
“With the establishment of a dedicated subsidiary that will lead development for three of our largest franchises and the inclusion of Tencent as a minority investor, we are solidifying the value of our assets, strengthening our financial position, and fostering optimal conditions for the long-term growth and success of these franchises,” Guillemot expressed.
