Ubisoft Barcelona Workers Take Legal Action Against Remote Work Policy Change
Unions assert that Ubisoft’s decision was made “abruptly and without clarity.”
Labor unions representing Ubisoft’s AAA and mobile studios in Barcelona have filed a lawsuit against the publisher of Assassin’s Creed regarding recent changes to its remote work policy.
In collaboration with the Spanish labor organization CGT (Confederación General del Trabajo), the unions are demanding that Ubisoft revert its return-to-office mandate and ensure that remote work is covered by a collective agreement.
In a communication sent to GamesIndustry.biz, the unions stated that while both parties were prepared to negotiate, management had not yet presented any proposal since the lawsuit was filed on October 14.
The alterations suggested by Ubisoft would reportedly require employees to return to the office at least three days a week.
This change would replace the existing monthly remote work guidelines that permitted personnel to work from home 60% of the month, as determined by the employees. Those with a full-time work-from-home arrangement would also need to adhere to the new policy.
The unions argue that Ubisoft’s decision was made “abruptly and without clarity,” noting that it could lead to logistical challenges, as workplaces are not equipped to accommodate all remote workers simultaneously.
