Todd Howard Responds to Troy Baker’s Role in Indiana Jones with a Touch of Humor and Support
Bethesda Game Studios executive producer Todd Howard was initially quite doubtful about renowned voice actor Troy Baker portraying the lead role in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, but he ultimately shifted his view after witnessing Baker’s performance.
Everyone learned from a Rolling Stone interview from October that Howard initially told Baker directly that he didn’t want him in the role of Indiana Jones, which, well, must have been somewhat upsetting, but now we are getting Baker’s perspective.
In an interview with the BBC, Baker shared that Howard “rolled his eyes” upon hearing Baker’s name suggested for the role of Indiana Jones. “I never imagined that my achievements would actually work against me,” Baker remarked.
Baker auditioned for the role just like any other performer and made it onto the final 2-actor shortlist under consideration for the part. Following that, Howard conducted a “blind taste test” where a panel of listeners evaluated the two performances and unanimously chose Baker.
“And I took that as a compliment,” Baker said. “He was like: ‘No, it’s a test. That’s the benchmark’.”
Initially, Baker felt considerable apprehension regarding Howard’s skepticism about his casting and thought he might be dismissed. However, while recording for the role, Howard told Baker, “‘You’re doing a fantastic job’.”
“And I responded: ‘You have no idea how much I needed to hear that right now’.”
