A heartbreaking end for the free-to-play fighter
There was once significant potential for Warner Bros. MultiVersus when it was initially revealed a few years back, and although the game turned out to be fairly enjoyable, it unfortunately hasn’t garnered enough engagement to warrant a prolonged existence.
Today, it has been confirmed that MultiVersus will cease operations on May 30th, 2025, with the final season commencing in just a few days. The game’s microtransactions will also be eliminated immediately, including on the Xbox Store.
“We want to express our gratitude to every player and individual who has ever engaged with or supported MultiVersus. The entire team at Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games has devoted our hearts and souls into this project. We will always be thankful for the tremendous backing from the MultiVersus community throughout this journey.”
The silver lining for offline players is that MultiVersus will continue to function after May 30th for local multiplayer games, but you need to ensure you’ve downloaded it prior to that date – as it will be taken off the Xbox Store on that day.
Regrettably, the signs of decline were evident for this title, with Warner Bros. revealing back in November that it had significantly underperformed even after its relaunch in May 2024. We’ve witnessed numerous companies attempt to replicate the success of Super Smash Bros. without much success… and now MultiVersus unfortunately finds itself on the same list as those games.
