Throughout The Game Awards 2024, one of Xbox’s most compelling discoveries was the unexpected return of The Outer Worlds 2 – following a long absence since 2021. This silence has been quite reasonable, though — developer Obsidian is notably occupied — and the game’s comeback in 2024 brings with it another intriguing twist. The Outer Worlds 2 is now set to launch simultaneously for PS5.
Indeed, introduced seamlessly at the conclusion of last night’s gameplay reveal was Sony’s PS5 branding – alongside Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass, and Steam, for certain. There is no indication here of a staggered release either – we’re expecting The Outer Worlds 2 to launch on day one for PS5.
Given that the original game was a multiplatform title back in 2019, and wasn’t technically released by Xbox even after Microsoft acquired the studio, we probably shouldn’t be surprised by this decision – considering Xbox’s current direction in 2024. Nonetheless, seeing the PS5 logo on Xbox game trailers is something we’re still adjusting to.
During Gamescom Opening Night Live, Microsoft revealed the staggered PS5 launch of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle; an announcement that sparked quite a bit of controversy among Xbox fans. This decision might not be as problematic – but it is still notable that Microsoft is seemingly opting for a day one PS5 launch with The Outer Worlds 2.
