It appears that Sony is in the “initial phases” of crafting a handheld device.
We’ve recently heard much about Xbox’s intentions to develop a handheld console eventually, but we were unaware that PlayStation was also planning something similar – it seems that’s the case according to a new report from Bloomberg.
The report indicates that Sony is in “the initial phases” of building a handheld that may or may not debut in the market as it is still years away from launch. This device would be distinct from the recently introduced PlayStation Portal gadget, which operates via remote play—instead, it seems the intention is for it to run PlayStation 5 games natively.
“Sony Group Corp. is progressing in the initial stages of developing a portable console that will allow users to play its PlayStation 5 games on the go.”
The report also mentions that Xbox is experimenting with handheld devices, a notion that has been suspected but not officially acknowledged by Microsoft until now. Just recently, Xbox’s Phil Spencer expressed that he “liked” the concept of creating a device eventually.
It’s clear that many factors could change before either an Xbox handheld or a PlayStation handheld makes its market debut, and there’s no certainty we’ll see both. Right now, however, handhelds are evidently the latest trend!
