The End of Joy-Con Stick Drift? The Switch 2’s Controllers Have Been Redesigned From The Ground Up
Does anyone have a piece of cardboard that is 1mm thick?
As part of yesterday’s Ask the Developer Vol. 16 Nintendo Switch 2, the creators of the console have been posed a myriad of in-depth inquiries regarding various technical features of their new device.
One of the most compelling aspects of the interview was when they discussed the complete redesign of the Switch and all its individual components.
As we all know, the Joy-Con stick drift issue has been quite annoying, and it has persisted through time. This problem was never completely resolved effectively, which brought us to part two of this interview, where Kouichi Kawamoto, the producer of Switch 2, was asked specifically about the Joy-Con. He replied;
“We have completely redesigned everything from the ground up for Joy-Con 2…In comparison to the previous Joy-Con controllers for Switch, the control sticks are larger and more robust, providing smoother movement. Additionally, we made Joy-Con 2 easier to hold for the improved console.
If we were to simply elongate the current Joy-Con vertically, they would become extremely difficult to manage, as your fingers wouldn’t reach the L and R buttons comfortably and they wouldn’t fit the shape of your hands properly. That’s why we enlarged the L and R buttons, rounded the bottom corners, and experimented with numerous placements of the control sticks and buttons, focusing on every aspect down to the millimeter or less, to achieve the design and structure we have now.”
Concerning the sticks, as Kawamoto mentions, they are indeed larger and more durable. However,
