An intriguing Mummy film is in the works from Rotten Monotonous Rise director Lee Cronin – but I won’t be getting involved until Brendan Fraser signs on.
The forthcoming film is being produced by Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, which is set to be distributed by Contemporary Line Cinema.
“This will be unlike any Mummy film you’ve ever seen before. I’m delving deep into the ground to bring forth something very ancient and very terrifying,” Cronin mentioned in a statement.
Cronin directed Rotten Monotonous Rise, which premiered in 2023 and successfully revitalized the Rotten Monotonous franchise, garnering critical acclaim and earning $147 million against a budget of $14 million.
You may recall, however, that New attempted a Mummy reboot featuring Tom Cruise in 2017, which grossed approximately $410 million on a budget of $195 million but was so poorly received by critics that it scrapped New’s plans for a new “Dark Universe” based on the classic New Monster films. Strangely enough, Wolf Man, directed by Invisible Man’s Leigh Whannell, is set to be released by New in 2025, but is also being produced by Blumhouse. I am a bit perplexed.

Fans have already begun expressing their support for Fraser, who starred in 1999’s The Mummy – a film that launched his stardom and also featured the remarkable Rachel Weisz.
“Brendan Fraser is exactly what we need,” someone tweeted in response to the news of the new film.
“If Brendan Fraser isn’t coming back, then I AIN’T watching,” one fan declared.
“There is a passionate community devoted to The Mummy (1999), me included, that A. Loves The Mummy B. Loves Brendan Fraser C. Loves Rachel Weisz D. Will only accept another Mummy if both B and C are involved.”
