The actors unhurried Split Fiction’s predominant characters nearly botched their first auditions because they did no longer know the script had two sides: “We had been correct stood there, sweating”
Elsie Bennett and Kaja Chan, the performers portraying Split Fiction twin characters Zoe and Mio, respectively, almost stumbled during their initial audition because they had forgotten to actually turn over the script they were holding to grasp the second half of the scene.
“It was a scene set in an elevator,” Bennett remarked in an interview on Hazelight’s YouTube channel (timestamped here). “We entered the room and performed the scene, and then, you know, at the end when someone usually says cut? No one said cut,” Bennett recounted.
“No, we were just standing there, sweating,” added Chan.
“We had delivered the final line and there was this [long pause], a lot of elevator acting. Really waiting, like, ‘they are really dragging out this cut,’ and then they finally said, ‘OK, cut, didn’t you have the rest of the scene?’ and neither of us realized there was another portion on the other side [of the script], and from that point we couldn’t stop laughing.”
“We lost it, but I think that actually benefited us, you know?” said Chan.
“We quickly recognized that we shared a similar vibe,” noted Bennett.
To be honest, I can easily see myself in a similar situation, so I completely resonate with Chan and Bennett’s predicament here. However, it’s quite amusing now to picture the two actors standing awkwardly in a fictional elevator, silently sweating profusely, only to discover that the crew behind the scene was just as puzzled as they were. Consider that, in some way, they both landed the role, making it even easier to chuckle at their dilemma in retrospect.
