Tekken 8 sales punch up to three million copies in first year

“Tekken 8 Soars with Three Million Copies Sold in Its First Year!”

More than a year after its launch, Tekken 8 has achieved 3 million copies sold globally.

Bandai Namco announced this achievement during a recent livestream, noting that the fighting game reached this milestone faster than 2017’s Tekken 7. Within just a month of its release, Tekken 8 had already sold over 2 million copies, significantly exceeding initial expectations.

“We hope everyone remains with us, as we have numerous exciting things planned to keep the franchise thriving,” stated Bandai Namco during the stream.

Tekken 8 represents the series’ first new entry in nearly a decade, and it was released to widespread praise. During the stream, the developer also revealed the first DLC character for the game’s Year 2 lineup: Anna Williams, who previously joined Tekken 7 as a post-launch fighter.

Sales for Tekken 8 are still ongoing

How does the 3 million copies of Tekken 8 stack up against other recent major fighting titles? In 2023, Street Fighter 6 from Capcom reached that very milestone in just six months, and by December 2024, it has sold over 4.4 million copies.

Mortal Kombat 1 from the same year nearly reached 3 million copies in about two months. In January, NetherRealm’s creative director Ed Boon announced that the sales had increased to 5 million copies, indicating that the game still had more potential.

When comparing within its own franchise, Tekken 7 managed to sell over 12 million copies by July 2024. This success was bolstered by frequent sales, the lengthy gap between games in the series, and intriguing DLC characters. So far, Tekken 8 has had a few DLC characters, but it will need to continue growing as the years go by and Bandai Namco maintains support for the game.
