One of the more understated triumphs in the 4X strategy genre was 2012’s Plague Inc., which gained even greater prominence during the sudden and, regrettably, opportune timeframe of the COVID-19 pandemic. Following this, game developer James Vaughan released a sequel titled Rebellion Inc. and has now introduced his latest game, which takes a hopeful perspective on the post-apocalyptic world.
In a statement from Game File (paywalled), designer James Vaughan reflected on the unexpected success of Ndemic Creation’s earlier title during tumultuous times, which led to his newest game — After Inc. — featuring an optimistic vision of rebuilding the planet after disaster.
“I have had numerous individuals express concern that our games seem to foretell the future,” Vaughan told Game File.
Plague Inc., as the name suggests, puts you in control of a global pandemic, where you make immediate decisions on how a devastating disease spreads worldwide. Much like the surge in viewership for the 2011 film Contagion, Plague Inc. experienced a significant rise in popularity in 2020 among those with a dark curiosity in engaging with a game about viruses while confined due to an actual global pandemic.
Following Plague Inc., Vaughan launched Rebellion Inc., a large-scale strategy game focusing on the political choices made amid rising insurgencies globally. It also found success and resonated with many as unrest continued to grow in contemporary society. However, for his next game, After Inc., the developer aimed to create something less grim and more centered on building a better world in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse — which is available now.
