Double Stallion, the creators of the outstanding League of Legends Metroidvania offshoot Convergence, is developing a new co-op action RPG titled Surfpunk that, honestly, looks incredibly cool.

Surfpunk was actually first introduced a few months ago; however, for some reason, it had slipped off my radar until its recent trailer, which displayed a newly disclosed class equipped with a throwable anchor and chain. Nevertheless, I seem to be getting ahead of myself; let’s explain what Surfpunk truly is.

Double Stallion characterizes it as an “intense, PvE co-op extraction ARPG” where you “jump on your Rushboard, explore endless islands, and scavenge powerful ancient technology.” I would concur with that description and further express that there appears to be clear inspiration from Diablo along with a few roguelike features such as procedurally generated islands and randomized runs. Plus, everyone is genuinely, genuinely attractive.

The world itself is also visually stunning, featuring a vibrant, dynamic color palette, anime-inspired character designs, and League of Legends-like cel-shading.

Surfpunk can be played solo, but I am primarily drawn to the co-op action, which permits you to team up with up to two friends to form a party where each player utilizes their class’s unique abilities to take on role-specific tasks.

As if there isn’t already plenty happening in Surfpunk, I’m also eager to see how the actual surfing mechanics unfold. Surfing isn’t just a means to travel between islands; it’s also how you finish each run, with massive tsunamis presenting various obstacles to navigate as you approach your Rushboard.

I also appreciate that you will have a home base to return to after each adventure, where you can hang out with your team, upgrade gear, customize your Raider and Rushboard, and enjoy well-deserved meals before setting off on your next journey.
