Upon their return to the main arena, it’s not long before the violence escalates once more. Gi-Hun and Hwang In-hoo (Lee Byung-hun) realize they must devise a new strategy to survive the night – and hopefully put an end to the brutality for good. Gi-hun declares it’s time to retaliate against those orchestrating the game, advising his fellow participants to hide when the lights go out and wait for the guards to enter. Then, when they attempt to execute their killing, they can spring into action and seize their firearms.
The plan works unexpectedly well as the rebels manage to eliminate several of the guards and commandeer their weapons. They then look for allies willing to join their mission to storm the upper levels and take control of the environment. A few join them, including Hyun-ju (Park Sung-hoon), as they initiate their assault, moving cautiously through the facility and engaging in shootouts with the guards at every turn.
Meanwhile, aboard the boat, the group becomes trapped in a storm as one of the soldiers heads up to the deck for a look. They spot the Captain (Oh Dal-su) tampering with the drone, sabotaging their efforts to locate the island. He eliminates the soldier before concealing the events from the rest of the crew – suggesting everyone is now aware of why they’ve been slow in pinpointing where the games are held…
Back in the arena, the rebels find themselves cornered with dwindling ammunition and what seems to be an unending attack from the masked guards. Gi-hun decides to make a move to gain access to the control room, bringing Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan) along. They make considerable progress until they reach the final staircase, where the guards relentlessly fire upon them as their bullets begin to run out.
In-ho offers to come and provide backup, accompanied by two other soldiers. When they reach Gi-hun, he hands over his last piece of ammunition and it seems for a moment that he might switch sides. Unfortunately, this is not the case as In-ho pushes the other soldiers forward before shooting them dead, then pretends over the radio to Gi-hun that he has been killed too. He quickly switches to another channel where he commands his guards to take action.
At the same time, Dae-ho (Kang Ha-neul) returns to the contestants’ quarters searching for more ammunition from the fallen guards. He locates some but suffers a panic attack and is unable to escape. Hyun-ju goes to look for him in the room, but before she can get back to the soldiers, the guards enter. Jang Geum-ja (Kang Ae-shim) stops her from confronting them and shooting her way out as it becomes clear that the odds are now stacked against the rebels.
In the final moments, In-ho reappears in his Frontman outfit and mask, approaching Gi-hun. “Witness the consequences of your little heroic game,” he warns, just before shooting Jung-bae dead.
Who perishes in Squid Game season 2?
It would take quite a while to list every single character that perishes in Squid Game season 2, but it’s fair to say that the violence this time is significant. In episode 1, the first major casualty is the Recruiter (Gong Yoo) who dies during a game of Russian Roulette with Gi-hun.
