Soul Assembly Faces Restructuring as 15% of Workforce is Laid Off

The VR studio Soul Assembly has terminated 15 percent of its workforce.

Studio CEO David Solari verified this information in a statement to UploadVR. “We can confirm a reduction of 15 percent in our team. This choice was made to ensure that the studio aligns with the needs of our upcoming projects,” he stated.

“We are providing support to the affected team members as they move toward new opportunities and thank them for their contributions. This action was crucial to position the company for future success during a challenging time for the gaming industry.

Soul Assembly recently collaborated with Ubisoft on Real Dance VR and has released a variety of other VR titles such as Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sister and Plunge Tiring: The Cabin.

Last year, it debuted the spatial puzzler Soul Spire exclusively for Apple Vision Pro.

The layoffs at Soul Assembly come months after the UK-based VR studio nDreams announced it would be reducing up to 17.5 percent of its positions to refocus on its “strategic focus.”

A “difficult time” for VR

Analysts indicate that the consumer VR industry has entered a “difficult time.” Consumer VR market research published by Omdia in December 2024 revealed that headset sales had dropped by 10 percent year-over-year to 6.9 million units.

Omdia senior principal analyst George Jijiashvili noted that the market is expected to decrease further in 2025.

“The consumer VR market continues to encounter substantial challenges, with various indicators highlighting a lack of momentum and adoption,” wrote Jijiashvili on Game Developer last year.

“The highly anticipated Apple Vision Pro launch has not delivered the revival the industry hoped for, with limited developer interest and diminishing momentum ten months after its release. Meanwhile, Meta’s latest entry-level Quest 3S has yet to ignite a significant sales boost.”

Omdia and Game Developer are sibling companies under InformaTechTarget.
