Sony Set to Become Major Stakeholder in FromSoftware’s Parent Company, Kadokawa Corporation

PlayStation will elevate its current ownership to 10% for $318 million

Sony is boosting its investment in Kadokawa Corporation, positioning itself as the primary shareholder of the FromSoftware publisher.

The corporation initiated a “strategic capital and business partnership agreement,” which involves Sony acquiring over 12 million new shares in Kadokawa on January 7, 2025, at around ¥50 billion ($318 million).

When combined with the Kadokawa shares that PlayStation previously acquired in February 2021, this will provide Sony with an approximate 10% ownership in the company.

Sony currently holds a 14% interest in Elden Ring developer FromSoftware, which is part of Kadokawa.

The agreement extends beyond the mere exchange of shares. Both companies plan to collaborate on various upcoming projects, such as adapting some of Kadokawa’s intellectual properties into live-action films and television series, co-developing anime productions, and enhancing the publishing and distribution efforts for both Kadokawa’s anime and video games.

This announcement follows Sony’s expression of interest in acquiring Kadokawa Corporation at the end of last month.
