The contest to revive Capcom’s Resident Evil series for the big screen has concluded, and Sony has emerged victorious. With the agreement freshly inked, Sony is wasting no time: it has already proclaimed that the upcoming Resident Evil film will arrive in theaters on September 18, 2026.

Rumors of a Resident Evil film reboot initially surfaced in January, with Zach Cregger – the creator and director renowned for 2022’s delightfully unpredictable Barbarian – attached to the project. At that point, four studios, including Warner Bros. and Netflix, were reportedly competing for the rights to the lucrative franchise, but Sony (as reported by Deadline) has ultimately triumphed.

The frenzy surrounding Resident Evil may not be particularly shocking, given that previous live-action adaptations collectively earned a staggering $1.2bn at the box office. Sony’s interest is particularly not surprising, considering it was a significant beneficiary of that revenue under its previous agreement to distribute Paul W. S. Anderson’s Resident Evil films to audiences.

Moreover, this isn’t Sony’s first attempt at a reboot. It also released 2021’s lackluster Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City – although the studio’s track record with the franchise is not exactly inspiring, there is at least some reason for hope. The fact that Cregger is on board to write and direct is an enticing prospect, especially given his clear enthusiasm for staying true to his Resident Evil adaptation.
