Werehogs, now no longer swearhogs

Regardless of its enduring cultural significance, time has transformed public perception of Sonic Unleashed. What debuted in high definition on Xbox 360 and PS3 (and standard definition on Wii and PS2) back in 2008, met with a tepid reaction of “oh, it’s like Sonic but slower… and duller” has evolved into a more nostalgic experience, particularly for those who grew up with the franchise.

It’s not exactly the first game that comes to mind when considering which blue blur adventure could benefit from a remaster, yet a fan-created PC port is allowing us to view it through a new lens (thanks to the tip from Push Sq.). Grab your eyeliner and sweep your bangs aside, as we’re craving Sonic Unleashed on the forthcoming Switch 2.

Inspired by the Majora’s MaskZelda 64 Recompiled‘ initiative, ‘Unleashed Recompiled’ brings Sonic’s emo phase to PC, complete with several sleek enhancements such as an uncapped frame rate, ultrawide support, full achievements, and more. It is fundamentally based on the Xbox 360 version of the game, meaning you’ll need to acquire the files from a legitimately purchased copy to get the port operational.

While the aforementioned trailer may differ significantly from the iteration of Sonic Unleashed that we Nintendo enthusiasts played on Wii back in the late 2000s, the enhanced resolution and frame rate have us pondering what an official overhaul could potentially look like for Sonic’s darker journey. Sonic Generations underwent the remaster treatment last year, and it could certainly serve as an excellent launch title for the Switch 2, right?

So, are there Sonic games that we would prefer to see receive an official remaster on Switch 2? Absolutely. But if the recent shift in sentiment towards Unleashed holds any truth, perhaps SEGA is resting on an undiscovered gem.

Would you like to see Sonic Unleashed make a comeback on Switch 2? Let us know in the comments.
