“Shogun Season 2: Scripts Completed and Production Set to Kick Off This Fall”
It’s truly astonishing how visually stunning the inaugural season of Hulu’s series, Shōgun, actually was. With an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score, along with securing an outstanding 18 Emmy Awards, not to mention four wins at the Golden Globes, we are now closer to seeing if they can recreate that magic once more. Insights from the show’s co-creator, Justin Marks, reveal that the scripts for season 2 are complete, polished, and ready to get beautifully bloody this year.
While attending the Critics Choice Awards this past weekend, Marks shared with Deadline the current status of the creative process, and things sound very promising. “We’re coming out of the writers’ room now. We’ve also wrapped up the ten episodes, and now we’re exploring how we’re going to film this. But we’re quite focused on the concept,” Marks stated. “What I hope to highlight more than anything is how, I believe, viewers will be amazed by some of the grand ideas right from the first episode of part two. So, we’ll start there and see where it leads us in future stories. But we are really thoughtful about it, especially for [Hiroyuki Sanada].”
Speaking of Lord Toranaga himself, Sanada – who took home the award for Best Actor in a Drama Series – disclosed what he desires for his character and the series that is set to receive a second and third season. “In Season 1, [Toranaga] hadn’t yet become a Shōgun. Therefore, I would like to see him rise to become the leader of Japan. That is my aspiration.”
It remains to be seen who may assist or obstruct his character’s journey, but Sanada provided a brief overview of those expected to meet with Lord Toranaga. “We’re aiming for the autumn of this year, and the writers’ room is working diligently now. We’re going to retain half of the Season 1 cast, while also introducing a new group,” Sanada informed Variety. “We’re finding the right team for next season now, so I’m excited.” He’s not the only one feeling this way.
