SEGA Hints at Potential Comeback with New Trademark Filings for Beloved Classic Titles

Consider the possibility of ‘Ecco the Dolphin’ making a splash on Xbox

Let’s be clear, we’re not implying that these two events are connected, but the timing is undeniably intriguing! It has been discovered that SEGA submitted trademarks in late December for one of its cherished…or shall we say “iconic” IP that has been around for quite some time.

The trademarks are for ‘Ecco the Dolphin‘ and ‘Ecco’ – an action-adventure series that debuted on the SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis back in 1992, developed by the team at Novotrade International (Appaloosa Interactive).

Interestingly, this coincides with a report from Windows Central yesterday regarding a “legendary Japanese IP” boasting “decades of history” that is set to be revealed at the upcoming Xbox Developer Direct next week. Unsurprisingly, this has led to a few lighthearted jokes on social media.

Before we get too excited, it’s important to note that trademarks don’t always lead to immediate announcements or news. SEGA also removed several games and collections in the first half of the same month last year, so perhaps they are gearing up for another retro revival.

If any significant updates arise, we will make sure to keep you informed. Do you foresee this series making a splash on Xbox eventually? Let us know in the comments.
