Whether or not it’s enjoyable or unsettling, however

Late last year, a patent surfaced indicating that Samsung was exploring the idea of creating its own foldable handheld console. Recently, the company has unveiled what such a device might actually look like at MWC25 in Barcelona.

With the Nintendo Switch 2 set to debut later this year, you might be curious if this new Samsung device will pose serious competition against the upcoming console. However, according to T3, this is merely a concept that Samsung hopes will inspire other manufacturers to adopt its foldable display technology in similar capacities.

Nonetheless, it’s an intriguing handheld, even if it does come across as somewhat unsettling. To allow the screen to fold completely, openings have been incorporated where the d-pad and face buttons are typically situated, ensuring that the analogue sticks do not interfere when closing the device.

Thus, the d-pad and face buttons remain present, but they bend into the openings from the outside. While this may not seem like the most comfortable solution, we should keep in mind that this is just a concept design at this stage.

In truth, we could see something like this coming to life in the next few years, given the overwhelming number of PC and emulation handhelds currently flooding the market. As for the Switch 2, however, we’re not entirely convinced this type of device will prove to be a notable threat to Nintendo’s forthcoming next-generation hardware.

Would you be interested in a foldable handheld console in the near future, or does this concept seem a bit impractical? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
