Jagex is expanding its horizons beyond MMORPGs with the launch of RuneScape: Dragonwilds – an expansive open-world survival crafting game. What makes it particularly noteworthy is that it emerges from the creators of the enduring MMORPG RuneScape 3 and its predecessor, Old School RuneScape. While Dragonwilds may differ mechanically from these titles, it remains firmly rooted in the RuneScape universe.

Whether solo or teaming up with three companions, RuneScape: Dragonwilds will take you to Ashenfall – a lost continent on Gielinor (the world where RuneScape takes place), where you will harness magic and enhance your skills to carve out a life for yourself amidst nature.

We can observe some elements reminiscent of MMORPGs here; after all, it wouldn’t be a title in the RuneScape universe without skills, and features designed to assist you with passive abilities, crafting recipes, and techniques to support your survival will be present.

You may also be able to harness Anima – often regarded as the vital energy of the universe, the source of all magic, and what the Wilder Gods utilize to nurture their eggs.

Apart from what I’m sure you will find to be fascinating RuneScape lore, Anima serves various functions in Dragonwilds, including summoning axes for immediate tree cutting or repairing armor after intense confrontations.

However, survival will not be a walk in the park. Ashenfall is home to forgotten secrets and classic RuneScape creatures, which means dragons are present. Where there are dragons, you can expect fire, chaos, and a heightened risk of being devoured. The task of overcoming the Dragon Queen will rest upon your shoulders, so it’s best to confront any fears about the ultimate reality swiftly.

Fortunately, it appears that several familiar RuneScape characters will be available to assist (or at least, characters that bear a resemblance to them). I’ve noticed the Wise Old Man sporting his rather legally acquired party hat…

Regarding the development of RuneScape: Dragonwilds, Jagex CEO Jon Bellamy stated: “Since the outset, community feedback has been integral to the creation of RuneScape: Dragonwilds.”

Bellamy mentioned that closed alpha tests have already taken place, and Jagex will be “heeding player feedback as we build the game during Early Access.”

RuneScape: Dragonwilds is set to debut in Early Access in Spring 2025. In the meantime, you can add it to your Steam wishlist today, and if you’re interested in learning more, there will be a Twitch livestream showcasing the game at 5 PM (BST) on Tuesday, April 15th.
