We do not have a release date for the Switch 2, and we also lack detailed information on what the game cartridges will appear like, nevertheless, it seems we may have already received “leaked dimensions” of the new device’s physical game packaging.
French retailer ‘Fnac’ has reportedly revealed the size of the Switch 2’s plastic game case, with the new casing design reportedly measuring 19.5cm x 13cm (according to ‘Necro’ Felipe Lima from Universo Nintendo):
“FNAC’s listing for Take-Two Interactive’s Nintendo Switch 2 game has dimensions comparable to the potential physical media cover. Assuming the measurements are accurate, I created a simple mockup.”
A side-by-side comparison of this larger case with the original Switch game case is also circulating online (via @CardnlH), and it appears the new case size would be closer to that of current PlayStation and Xbox game packaging.
So, indeed – more plastic, and these cases might also take up more valuable space in stores (and on shelves) worldwide. Regarding the game card, Nintendo hasn’t provided significant details about it yet, but the “first look” Switch 2 trailer did showcase the game card slot, which is also located adjacent to the audio jack.
If Switch 2 mirrors the transition from DS to 3DS, the game card might not differ much at all. Nintendo has also confirmed backward compatibility – indicating that the new device will be capable of playing original Switch games, including both “physical and digital” titles.
Nintendo will share more about the Switch 2 in its upcoming Direct presentation, scheduled to air on April 2, 2025.
