My current JRPG interest has evolved into the pivotal combat system in Sea Delusion, a new open-world action-RPG where you literally cast a line and reel in fish “to save the world.”

If I wasn’t clear enough, the elevator pitch for Sea Delusion is straightforward and compelling: you borrow a rather familiar fishing minigame, in this instance one quite similar to Stardew Valley’s, and make it the primary gameplay mechanic in a bite-sized open-world RPG. “This is not just a tranquil fishing game. The destruction of the world is imminent,” cautions the game’s Steam description.

Sea Delusion marks the first endeavor from creator and developer Metasla, yet you wouldn’t guess it from an artistic or gameplay perspective. The graphics are pixel-perfect, the RPG systems are intricate yet accessible, and most importantly, the fishing minigame is enjoyable and challenging, though perhaps a bit derivative. The fish can provide combat assistance, which renders Sea Delusion’s fishing intriguingly unusual, yet whether intentionally or not, it is not groundbreaking.

The core gameplay loop is: catch fish, use materials to create new gear with enhanced stats and occasional bonus perks, catch rarer and more valuable fish, and repeat. That said, there is a surprising variety of gameplay elements across many aspects of the game. For a title this brief (I completed it in roughly seven hours), I wasn’t expecting to encounter so many different puzzles, mini-games, boss types, and random stealth and bullet-hell sequences.
