Prior to BioWare releasing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, or Dragon Age: Origins, the studio revisited the realm of Dungeons & Dragons in 2002 with Neverwinter Nights. In the nearly 23 years since its release, Neverwinter Nights has continued to be highly regarded by fans who have supported the title with user-generated mods. Now, there’s a brand new expansion for Neverwinter Nights titled Doom of Icewind Dale, officially sanctioned by Wizards of the Coast.
Doom of Icewind Dale was crafted by Luke Scull, a game developer who began his career as a modder for Neverwinter Nights before joining Ossian Studios to work on the official expansion for Neverwinter Nights 2, Mysteries of Westgate. Scull has also made his mark as a narrative designer outside the gaming industry, where he created Doom of Icewind Dale as the inaugural part of a new multi-chapter series called The Blades of Netheril.

The storyline for Doom of Icewind Dale starts approximately 20 years after the events of Neverwinter Nights, with the player’s character waking up fatigued and having their memories erased. From there, players must regain their identity, uncover the reasons behind their abduction, and “unravel a sinister scheme to release a wrathful godling upon the North.”
The original game is necessary to play the expansion, but Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition is currently available at a discount on Fanatical. As for Doom of Icewind Dale, players can purchase it for $10 on Steam. The game offers roughly 10-15 hours of gameplay, allowing players to explore several of the 10 towns located in Icewind Dale, along with various locations including Icewind Pass, the Dwarven Valley, and the Reghed Glacier. It also features new monsters and original music composed for the expansion.
Similar to other adaptations of D&D, both Neverwinter Nights and Doom of Icewind Dale are set in The Forgotten Realms. This setting is also expected to be utilized in the live-action Dungeons & Dragons series currently in production.
GameSpot and Fanatical are both owned by Fandom.
