Reunion of Legends: Hayley Atwell and Chris Evans Set to Star in Avengers: Doomsday

Following closely on the footsteps of reports about Chris Evans potentially making a comeback in Avengers: Doomsday, it seems that Hayley Atwell will likely be reprising her role as Agent Peggy Carter, according to Deadline. This indeed suggests that Chris Evans is set to return as Steve Rogers, the original Captain America, after all.

According to Deadline, the two had initially been in discussions about starring in their own film, likely set in the years after Steve’s return to the past and subsequent marriage to Peggy at the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame. However, since a plot couldn’t be agreed upon, their reunion and return as Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter has seemingly been moved to Avengers: Doomsday, which will also feature former Iron Man actor Robert Downey, Jr. reprising his role as the nefarious Doctor Doom.

This is all part of a grand Avengers: Endgame reunion, with directors Joe and Anthony Russo also returning to direct Avengers: Doomsday along with its anticipated sequel Avengers: Secret Wars.

Atwell was last seen as Peggy Carter in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, portraying an alternate-reality version of the character known as Captain Carter, who received the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers in her timeline. Could the main MCU version of Peggy Carter ultimately become Captain Carter as well in Avengers: Doomsday?

I’ve enjoyed engaging in some speculation about the possibility of Chris Evans returning in a fresh role as a villain, much like Downey. However, since Evans and Atwell are reportedly coming back specifically as Steve Rogers and Agent Peggy Carter, it seems that storyline may be put to rest. Yet, there remains intriguing potential for what the storyline might entail, especially if a version of Captain Carter makes an appearance.

It is certainly exciting to consider Evans possibly returning as Captain America, especially as news arrives just months ahead of Anthony Mackie’s debut as the new Captain America, Sam Wilson, in his upcoming solo film Captain America: Brave New World. The question is, will Evans’ comeback overshadow the anticipated excitement for Sam Wilson’s significant solo film debut? Or will it enhance the anticipation for the inevitable Steve Rogers/Sam Wilson partnership in Avengers: Doomsday?

For the time being, we will have to wait and see, as Avengers: Doomsday is not scheduled to release until 2026. In the meantime, Captain America: Brave New World is set to hit theaters on February 14.
