It’s well-known that GTA 6 ranks among the most highly awaited upcoming video games, and a recent report suggests it’s such a massive title that rival publishers are hesitant to finalize their own release schedules until they see whether its anticipated launch in 2025 remains intact.

A report from Bloomberg illustrates just how significant the launch of GTA 6 is poised to be. Its predecessor, GTA 5, has earned around $9 billion since its release in 2013 — surpassing the combined revenue of the entire Final Fantasy series and even the top three highest-grossing films collectively. Additionally, the GTA 6 trailer that debuted a year ago has already amassed over 200 million views on YouTube.

Referring to insiders from various publishers, Schreier notes that “some competing game publishers” are postponing their release date announcements to stay as far away from GTA 6’s launch as possible. These companies seem to be waiting as long as they can to see if GTA 6’s release will be pushed into 2026 or if it will hold its current fall 2025 timeline.

Rockstar and its parent company Take-Two Interactive have largely remained tight-lipped regarding GTA 6 this year; however, former GTA developer Obbe Vermeij recently predicted that the sequel could sell for over a decade, suggesting that due to its lack of competition, Rockstar will not release it until they are completely satisfied with the final product.

Analyst states that the 2025 release of GTA 6 along with Nintendo Switch 2 is nearly unparalleled: “I don’t recall a year like this where so much is centered around just two major products”
