“Player adoption keeps growing stronger”

'We Feel Really Good About the Title': Take-Two Reflects on Civ 7's Slow Start 1

In our original Civilization 7 review at launch, we largely praised the game, though we noted that absent mechanics and divisive tweaks might require an acclimatisation period.

Firaxis, the series’ steward, has kept refining the build – yet on PC, its biggest platform, it has consistently registered fewer simultaneous users than Civilization 5 and Civilization 6. That’s far from ideal.

In a chat with IGN, however, Take-Two chief Strauss Zelnick stated he’s unfazed by the sequel’s long-range outlook – despite its sluggish opening act:

“The crucial point is that Civ has historically been a gradual grower. While I’m no great adherent to the long-tail model for entertainment products – Civ is an exception to that rule. At this moment, our estimates for the title’s lifetime value line up perfectly with the figures we forecast at the outset.

Although we began softly and have implemented plenty of changes – with more tweaks ahead – user adoption is steadily climbing and we’re very confident in the game. Over the years, I believe it will earn a celebrated spot in the franchise hall of fame.”

Zelnick declined to reveal exact unit sales for Civ 7, but affirmed the trajectory is “trending upward” as ongoing updates shore up the experience.
