Implicit Conversions, the studio responsible for emulating various popular PS1 and PS2 titles as part of PS Plus Premium, is discreetly developing a PS3 emulator.

Although CEO Bill Litshauer asserts that enhancing its PS2 support is his company’s top priority, he mentioned in an interview with Mystic that he feels it will be “achievable” to emulate PS3 games in the future – likely on the PS5 and “definitely” on the PS6.

He stated:

“We believe it’s achievable. I don’t think anyone anticipates it to function on a Switch or a PS4, but perhaps PS5 and definitely PS6 whenever that is released. We do believe it’s technically feasible; it’s merely a question of allocating the time, effort, and resources to it.”

Litshauer clarified that supporting PS3 is a “secondary project” for his team and that it actually hasn’t received a significant number of requests for the console. Nevertheless, it’s something they are pursuing regardless.

He further elaborated:

“We’re collaborating with a third-party to assist us with this. Thus, we have a foundation to build upon. It’s a secondary project for us that we’re exploring gradually. To be candid, PS2 is more of a priority for us due to the demand. However, it’s an enjoyable project for our engineers.”

Many feared that PS3 emulation might never materialize because of the intricate design of the console’s architecture, yet in recent years we’ve witnessed advancements in PC-based solutions like RPCS3.

As Litshauer appears to imply, the most significant hurdle seems to be the time and resources needed to achieve it.

Hopefully, it’s a venture Sony will eventually support, as it would be wonderful to see PS3 games included in PS Plus Premium in the future.
