Perhaps, regardless

This is a convoluted period for PlayStation enthusiasts.
This week witnessed the revelation of Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble and Horizon Steel Frontiers, two premier first-party Sony titles that won’t be accessible on the PS5.
There’s background that’s being overlooked in the social media hype, naturally: PlayStation has long sought to delve into mobile, and its ultimate goal with these initiatives is to broaden the brands.
One might argue similarly regarding its choice to launch leading first-party games like Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us: Part 2 on the PC, yet fresh conjecture from Windows Central journalist Jez Corden asserts the company may be retracting that strategy.
Now, while in the initial statement – noticed by Reddit following a podcast discussion – the commentator indicated he received information from a “very reliable source”, he’s since specified on X (or Twitter) that the rumors are “very ambiguous”. So, interpret that as you like.
However, as part of a lengthy conversation regarding the Japanese behemoth, Corden asserts his alleged contact informed him that PlayStation is “likely retracting from PC”.
This comes in light of findings made on the PS5 operating system last week, where fans data-mined a “Cross-Buy” icon, potentially indicating a type of launcher for PlayStation titles on PC.
Corden has since clarified that this is “not a serious report or leak”, and the implication is that this would only pertain to single-player games should it prove to be factual.
We are aware that Sony recently eliminated “game revenue from beyond console” from its list of strategic indicators, implying that releasing its software outside the PlayStation ecosystem isn’t a significant focus anymore.
However, it is already clear that off-console sales are practically a trivial matter for PlayStation’s operations.
In its latest quarterly report, multiformat game sales constituted around 2% of the division’s total revenue, and this includes more than a month of Helldivers 2 on Xbox as well.
Personally, we don’t believe there’s much substance to this narrative really.
We anticipate Sony will persist on its established trajectory, porting an occasional title here and there and backing its live service initiatives on platforms where they are sensible.
