Tokyo-based developer ARIKA was established by Capcom icon Akira Nishitani, who contributed to legendary 90s arcade games like Final Fight and Street Fighter 2.
In his new venture, he developed the Street Fighter EX trilogy, a significantly underrated variation of Capcom’s fighting series, which transformed the franchise’s 2D gameplay into 3D.
These games are frequently disregarded by contemporary fighting game enthusiasts, but while not perfect, we have consistently appreciated the way they play. We hold particularly vivid memories of Street Fighter EX3 on the PS2, a launch title back then.
Fighting EX Layer, launched on the PS4 in 2018, was developed as a spiritual successor to both 1998’s original Fighting Layer and the Street Fighter EX series, featuring some overlapping unique characters.
It’s currently priced at $0.99/£0.79 on the PS Store, a historic low offer, as ARIKA commemorates its 30th anniversary.
Here’s what the developer posted on social media:
“Since our inception in 1995, we have chased the core of ‘play’, delivering numerous titles into the world throughout the years. We wish to extend our sincere appreciation to all the players who have backed us, the development team who have journeyed with us, our publishers, and partner companies, along with the gaming audience who have supportively cheered us on.”
While there are numerous technical gameplay elements to comprehend here, it’s probably the most approachable fighter ARIKA has ever produced, complete with auto-combos and a streamlined command system.
Honestly, even though we never found the time to review this game upon its release, we’ve been enjoying it intermittently for several years now. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to try it at this new discount price.
