“Her journey for retribution is merely the beginning”
- by Liam Croft

It seems the narrative in PS5’s Ghost of Yotei holds more twists than simply the revenge-driven mission to track down the Yotei Six who murdered Astu’s family.
In a fresh interview with GamesRadar, the concept Sucker Punch Productions has been promoting is characterized as merely the “beginning”. Nate Fox stated: “We wish to keep story specifics under wraps, but I can inform you that her journey for retribution is just the beginning – definitely not the entirety – but it’s an excellent start.”
This remark followed mention of Assassin’s Creed Shadows launching earlier this year, which shares the same backdrop as Ghost of Yotei and also presents a narrative of vengeance incorporating investigative elements.
Regarding the parallels, Fox remarked: “Our game stands as our own. It includes the attributes we hold dear. Our tale of retribution is a timeless one in samurai cinema, yet it’s only the initial phase in this extensive narrative of Atsu transforming from a solitary survivor to forming a wolf pack,” further suggesting there’s more to the game than simply a thirst for vengeance.
Creative Director Jason Connell then elaborated it’s just a situation encountered by creatives. “We are enormous enthusiasts of this genre, so when other forms of media emerge, be it a video game or a movie or a TV series, we are somewhat thrilled that it is there as it propels the medium ahead.”
In another interview with Game Informer, additional clarity regarding the game’s framework is presented. You do not choose to pursue any of the six members of the Yotei Six in any sequence you prefer; rather, there is “a linear narrative structure that we firmly believe in to ensure that Atsu’s quest for vengeance deeply resonates”. It is mentioned that there’s “a touch more choice” in the sequel, yet it remains predominantly linear.
